On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on the 8th of March, Völkerrechtsblog celebrates women in international law with the establishment of the annual ‘Women in International Law’ symposium. The latter will be taking place during the week of the 8th of March every year and will be hosting blog posts, interviews and/or podcasts on topics relating to women’s rights, feminist approaches to international law and the struggles of female scholars in international legal academia. This year, the symposium will host a series of blog posts on women’s reproductive rights, feminist approaches to international law, and the gendered impact of conflicts on the right to leave a country.
A series of blog posts on women’s reproductive rights will kick off the symposium. In this context, Eva Maria Bredler will illustrate how the adoption of a non-discrimination analysis in the reproduction-related jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights would contribute to reproductive justice. Subsequently, Lea Bilke, Vanessa Bliecke and Ella Schönleben will explore access to abortion in Latin America through the lens of the relevant jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Satang Nebaneh will then provide an overview of the status of reproductive health and rights – particularly of access to abortion – in Africa, while Ramya Kudekallu will view India’s forced sterilisation practices through the lens of international human rights law.
After the above analyses on women’s reproductive rights, Rohini Sen’s contribution will illustrate new perspectives to the perception of feminist approaches to international law and will highlight their significance in the pedagogy and knowledge making of international law. Finally, Pia Lotta Storf will underline the gendered impact of conflicts on the right to leave a country and Vasuki Nesiah will point to feminist engagements in the field of peace and conflict.
