Nuremberg Academy Lecture 2026

Does the International Court of Justice Have a Criminal Jurisdiction?

28.04.2026
17:30 Uhr

On Tuesday, 28 April 2026, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy will host the Nuremberg Academy Lecture 2026, which will be delivered by Judge Hilary Charlesworth of the International Court of Justice. The event will take place in Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice, the historic venue of the Nuremberg trials.

In her lecture, Judge Charlesworth will explore the tension between the Court’s formally limited jurisdiction and its substantive engagement with issues commonly associated with international criminal law. She will examine how such questions reach the Court’s docket through non-traditional avenues, including advisory proceedings, and the challenges that arise from this indirect engagement. The discussion will situate these developments within broader debates on accountability and the relationship between international criminal law and general international law

The lecture is open to the public free of charge and does not require prior registration. The lecture will be followed by a reception, to which all participants are heartedly invited.

A video recording will be made available on the Academy’s YouTube channel after the event. Further details are available on the website of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy.
