The Police, Investigative Interviewing and Human Rights

Third Oranienburg Human Rights Conference

22.-24.05.2024

An international conference on THE POLICE, INVESTIGATIVE INTERVIEWING AND HUMAN RIGHTS: LEGAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS will take place at Brandenburg State Police University – Hochschule der Polizei des Landes Brandenburg – from 22 to 24 May 2024.

Research has shown that in general, oppressive and coercive interviewing methods tend to intimidate the interviewed persons and produce unreliable statements, including false confessions. In contrast, the use of investigative, non-coercive interviewing methods has proven to be a most effective way to solve crimes while protecting the human rights of all affected persons. On an initiative of Juan E. Méndez, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, there is now a growing trend – almost a movement – to modernise the methods of police questioning by introducing investigative interviewing in many states throughout the world.

The conference will analyse and evaluate these developments. Speakers and participants from all over the world will share their knowledge, experience and good practice in a very dynamic and interdisciplinary field of work. We expect and welcome a variety of participants such as police officers, academics, judges, public prosecutors, practicing lawyers and psychologists, human rights activists as well as officials from government authorities and international organisations.
