International Law in the UK: A Troubled Relationship?

Call for Papers: „International Law in the United Kingdom: A Troubled Relationship?”

A Conference hosted by the University of Worcester School of Law and the Constitutions, Rights and Justice Research Group

Friday 8th November 2024, 10:00am – 17:00pm, University of Worcester (in-person)

Recent developments have let scholars to question the integrity of the UK’s relationship with the international law and institutions. Of note are the UK’s exit from the European Union, the migrant crisis and ´Rwanda plan`, and proposed withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights. This Conference invites papers That discuss the interplay between international law and domestic (UK) law. Papers may look at any area of international law, whether public or private and take any methodological approach: doctrinal, socio-legal, comparative, critical or otherwise. Interdisciplinary papers are also welcomed. The following is a non-exhaustive list of themes that may be explored:

  • The UK court’s approach to and engagement with the findings and decisions of international courts, tribunals or other adjudicative bodies;
  • Dualism and the UK constitution;
  • The impact of international law on government policy;
  • The role of international law in parliamentary deliberation;
  • Attitudes towards and/or perceptions of international law in the UK;
  • The impact of international law on UK business and commerce
  • Devolution & international Law.

This is intended to be an inclusive and welcoming conference intended for all scholars, whatever their discipline or career stage. Contributions from early-career researchers and postgraduate research students are therefore welcomed. Papers from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged.

Papers should be no longer than 20 minutes and may be accompanied with slides or similar.

Following the conference, contributors will be invited to submit their papers for publication (subject to peer review) in an edited collection (title and publisher TBC).

  • Deadline for slides: Thursday 7th November 2024, 5pm.
  • Conference: Friday 8th November 2024.
