This symposium, published in cooperation between the organisers of the conference Post-Hegemonic International Law? and Völkerrechtsblog, brings together a series of reflections that expand and prolong the conversations initiated in Zurich in November 2025. Building on the conference’s central concern with international law’s current breaking point, the contributions critically examine how shifting geopolitical configurations, renewed contestations of global norms, and persistent epistemic hierarchies are reshaping the field. Spanning doctrinal, historical, and interdisciplinary perspectives, from digital governance and environmental transformations to armed conflict, migration, and the role of international courts, the symposium highlights how scholars from diverse regions and experiences are engaging with the challenges and possibilities of a post-hegemonic moment. Together, these interventions not only scrutinise the fractures and asymmetries that characterise today’s international legal order but also explore the imaginative horizons and counter-hegemonic practices that may enable a more plural, equitable, and genuinely international future for the discipline.
