One Position as Legal Research and Technical Assistant (100%)

The Environmental Law Programme (ELP) is the principal source of environmental governance and legal expertise to the IUCN Programme.
The work of the ELP is carried out by the IUCN Environmental Law Centre (ELC) in collaboration with the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) and IUCN Global, Regional and Country Programmes.
The ELC’s primary areas of work are:
• The conceptual development of environmental law and policy at international and national levels;
• Provision of strategic and technical advice to implement environmental law at national and local levels;
• Strengthening capacities to foster the effective implementation of environmental law at global, national and local levels;
• Development of information and sharing of knowledge on environmental policy, law and governance for informed decision-making.At present, the ELC’s work focuses on governance and legal issues relating to various aspects of biological diversity, climate change, Nature based Solutions and transboundary resources.
Other new areas may emerge for the ELC based on the evolution of the IUCN Programme.
The ELC maintains the world’s premier environmental law information service: ECOLEX –The Gateway to Environmental Law, a partnership between IUCN, FAO and UNEP.

Under the overall supervision of the Director of the IUCN Environmental Law Centre, and the direct supervision of the assigned Legal Officer (s), the Legal Research and Technical Assistant (LRTA) will support and assist in developing and implementing the ELC’s project portfolio. Working closely with the assigned Legal Officer (s), the LRTA will provide inputs needed for the implementation of existing projects, as well as support the development and expansion of the portfolio and contribute to monitoring and reporting on project execution.
In close collaboration with staff of the ELC, the LRTA will support ELC’s work in the following substantive areas:
• Water law and governance.
• Transboundary water cooperation and diplomacy.Key functions
Under the supervision of the assigned Legal Officer, the LRTA will:
• Support the implementation and further development of existing initiatives and projects, which may include research, analysis, drafting; reviewing and editing of papers and reports; the organization of workshops, dialogues and meetings, general project management, and selected project-related administrative duties.
• Assist in the development of project concepts and proposals within the ELC’s portfolio.
• Identify funding opportunities, which may include preparing and organizing documentation and setting up meetings with potential partners.
• Contribute to monitoring and reporting on projects and programme implementation.
• Project conceptualization and development.
• Perform any other related duties as required.

• graduate qualification in law, such as JD or Master’s Degree

• strong writing and communications skills in English and French

• at least two years of experience in international law, environmental law, governance of natural resources and Project Management or related fields

• proficiency in spanish is an advantage

• academic and professional experience in Africa is an asset
