The diversification of civilian agency in armed conflict

In recent conflicts we have seen states increasingly rely on alternative actors. Civilians, including corporate actors, are playing an increasingly active role in national defence doctrines. In a similar fashion, we have seen more states adopt concepts such as total defence doctrines and resilient societies.

On the 28^th February 2025, the War Studies Research Centre is hosting a conference on the international legal consequences of this increased use of civilian and corporate actors during armed conflict. The conference will be hosted in Amsterdam, at the Marine Establishment. The deadline for abstracts is November 1^st 2024. Full details, including some suggested questions, can be found here.
